User segmentation in Userorbit allows you to define specific groups of users based on their properties, behavior, and activity. These segments, also known as audience rules, enable precise targeting for various in-app experiences, ensuring that the right message reaches the right user at the right time. Rules can be combined using AND/OR logic to create highly granular audiences.

Condition Types

  • User Propertyequals, contains, greater than, less than, exists, not exists — Target users based on custom or standard user attributes. Examples: Plan equals "Pro", Country contains "US".
  • Signup Datebefore, after, between — Segment users based on when they first signed up for your product. Examples: Signup Date after "2023-01-01", Signup Date between "2023-01-01" AND "2023-01-31".
  • Last Seenbefore, after, within X days — Identify active or inactive users based on their last recorded session. Examples: Last Seen within 7 days, Last Seen before "2024-01-01".
  • Custom Eventsperformed, not performed, performed X times — Target users based on specific actions they have taken (or not taken) within your application. Examples: Event "Completed Onboarding" not performed, Event "Purchased Item" performed at least 3 times.

How Segments Are Used

  • Product Tours — Target specific user groups with tailored product walkthroughs, guiding new users or highlighting new features to existing ones.
  • Checklists — Assign onboarding or task completion checklists to relevant user segments, ensuring a personalized onboarding experience.
  • Surveys — Deploy contextual surveys to gather feedback from specific user demographics or those who have completed certain actions.
  • Announcements — Deliver in-app announcements and changelogs only to affected user groups, enhancing relevance and reducing noise.

Creating Reusable Segments

Userorbit allows you to save frequently used audience rules as reusable segments. This feature streamlines the process of creating new campaigns by letting you apply predefined user groups across multiple product tours, surveys, or checklists without rebuilding the rules each time.

Examples

Here are some common examples of user segments:

  • New Users (< 7 days): Signup Date is within the last 7 days. This segment is ideal for onboarding flows and initial welcome messages.
  • Pro Plan Users: User Property "Plan" equals "Pro". Use this to provide exclusive content or gather feedback specific to your premium users.
  • Users Who Haven't Completed Onboarding: Custom Event "Onboarding Complete" not performed. Target these users with onboarding reminders or helpful resources.
  • Inactive Users (Last Seen > 30 days ago): Last Seen is more than 30 days ago. Useful for re-engagement campaigns.

Notes

  • Audience rules are evaluated in real-time, ensuring that users dynamically enter and exit segments as their properties and behaviors change.
  • The combination of AND and OR conditions provides powerful flexibility, but it's crucial to test complex rules to ensure they capture the intended audience.
