Multi-step surveys break longer questionnaires into one question per screen. Users are more likely to complete a survey when they see one question at a time rather than a wall of questions. This guide covers how to create effective multi-step surveys in Userorbit.
When to use multi-step surveys
Use multi-step surveys when:
You have more than 3 questions — single-page surveys work best with 1–3 questions.
Questions depend on previous answers — for example, a follow-up question that only appears if the user gave a low NPS score.
You want higher completion rates — showing one question at a time reduces cognitive load and abandonment.
How to build a multi-step survey
Go to Surveys in the left sidebar and click Create Survey.
Choose a survey type — NPS, CSAT, CES, or Custom Multi-Question for full control.
Add questions one at a time. Each question you add becomes a separate step. The order you add them in is the order users see them.
For NPS and CSAT surveys, the rating question is always step 1. Add an open-ended follow-up question ("What is the main reason for your score?") as step 2.
Configure targeting rules under Settings → Targeting to control who sees the survey and on which pages.
Under Settings → Appearance, the multi-step format is automatically applied when your survey has multiple questions. You can customize colors, position, and button text here.
Click Publish to make the survey live, or Save Draft to continue editing later.
Design tips for multi-step surveys
Keep it short — Aim for 5 questions or fewer. Completion rates drop sharply after question 5.
Show progress — Userorbit automatically displays a progress indicator (e.g., "Step 2 of 5") so users know how much is left.
Put sensitive questions last — If you ask for an email or personal information, put it at the end after the user has already invested time in earlier questions.
Test on mobile — Multi-step surveys display as full-screen modals on mobile. Preview your survey on a phone-sized screen to make sure questions and buttons fit.
Viewing results
After publishing, go to the survey and click the Analytics tab to see response counts, completion rates, and per-question breakdowns. The step-level data shows you exactly where users drop off.
