What we'll build
Let's create our first survey — a Net Promoter Score (NPS) survey that asks users how likely they are to recommend your product. We'll configure the question, set up targeting, preview it, and publish. This should take about five minutes.
Step 1: Create a new survey
From the Userorbit dashboard, navigate to Surveys in the left sidebar and click Create Survey. You'll be prompted to choose a survey type. Select NPS from the template options — this pre-fills the standard NPS question and scale for you.
Give your survey a name for internal reference, like "Q2 NPS Survey". This name is only visible to your team, not to end users.
Step 2: Configure the question
The NPS template comes with the classic question: "How likely are you to recommend [Product] to a friend or colleague?" You can customize this text if you want — for example, replacing "[Product]" with your actual product name.
Below the main question, you'll see an optional follow-up field. We recommend enabling it. This adds a free-text question that asks "What's the main reason for your score?" Follow-up responses give you the qualitative context behind the numbers.
Configure the appearance:
- Scale labels: The default "Not at all likely" and "Extremely likely" work well for most cases.
- Thank-you message: Customize what users see after submitting. Something like "Thanks for your feedback!" keeps it simple.
- Brand colors: The survey inherits your global widget theme by default. You can override colors here if needed.
Step 3: Set targeting
Navigate to the Targeting tab to decide who sees the survey and when. For a first NPS survey, a good starting configuration is:
- User property:
created_atis more than 30 days ago. This ensures you only survey users who have had time to form an opinion. - Display frequency: Once per user, every 90 days. NPS is most useful as a periodic pulse check, not a one-time event.
- URL rule: Show on any page (leave blank), or restrict to your main dashboard if you want a consistent trigger point.
These rules mean only established users will see the survey, and no one will be asked more than once per quarter.
Step 4: Preview
Click the Preview button to see the survey as your users will experience it. The NPS card will appear in the widget position (typically bottom-right). Walk through the flow:
- The NPS scale appears with numbers 0 through 10.
- Click a number — the follow-up question slides in.
- Type a response and submit.
- The thank-you message appears briefly, then the card dismisses.
If anything looks off — wrong colors, awkward wording, unexpected layout — go back and adjust before publishing.
Step 5: Publish
When you're satisfied with the preview, click Publish. The survey is now live and will begin appearing to users who match your targeting rules.
Monitoring responses
Head to the Results tab of your survey to see responses as they come in. You'll see your overall NPS score (ranging from -100 to 100), a breakdown of promoters, passives, and detractors, and individual follow-up responses. Use this data to identify trends and prioritize improvements.
